Instagram Insights: The Savvy Entrepreneur's Secret Weapon

August 5, Jack MacDonald

Instagram is more than just a savvy app for sharing photos of your brunch. Whether you’re a business owner or young professional, Instagram can be a powerful marketing tool with the potential to take your business and personal brand to the next level while maximizing revenue.

What is Instagram Insights?

Instagram’s Insights feature is a secret weapon for taking your social media game to the next level. With Instagram Insights, your account will collect easy-to-read data which can be used to attract more followers and boost post engagement. We will outline the ins and outs of this (free!) feature below.

Activating Instagram Insights

In order to activate this powerful feature, you must manually locate it in your profile Account Settings. (Note: Your account must be public to use professional business features)

  1. Make your account public: Settings, Account Privacy, Set to Public
  2. Convert to Business profile: Settings, Account, “Switch to Professional Account”, Confirm Account Information

What will insights show me?

Once your account is converted to a business profile, Instagram will collect demographic information on your audience in addition to quantifying how your profile and story posts perform with your followers.

If your account has more than 100 followers, Insights will anonymously show you an overview of who is viewing and interacting with your content. After posting several times on your account, you will gain comprehensive analytics on the age of your audience, gender of viewers, and general geographic location.

On individual posts, Insights will show you how many accounts viewed and interacted with the post, how many accounts viewed your profile/website after viewing the post, how many users sent the post to another user, and how many times it was saved.

How can I use Insights to my advantage?

  • Tailor content to your audience.
Knowing the composition of your audience allows you to design content that is appealing and relatable. If your audience is composed of younger viewers, it is important to create posts that will relate to this group (ie. up to date lingo). As an added bonus, followers may share your posts with Instagram users in a similar demographic and thus increase your follower count.
  • Post when your followers are most active.
After substantial information is collected, Insights will indicate exactly when your followers are most active on Instagram. With this information, you can plan the best time during the week or even time of day to post on your profile in order to maximize post engagement. If your followers are more active on Tuesday evenings than Tuesday mornings, the evening is a better time to post.
  • Find performance patterns.
Analyze the performance of each of your posts. What kind of post tends to earn the most likes? What kind of post attracts new followers? Use analytics to quantify exactly what works for your brand and design your posts accordingly. A helpful feature of Insights is that you can see exactly how many people bookmarked or sent your post to another user. A good post will have a high number of likes, comments, bookmarks, and will be sent to many other users. Make this your goal and analyze how a variety of posts perform after you activate Insights in order to adapt and improve your posts.
  • Use relevant hashtags.
When it comes to reaching new Instagram users, hashtags are your friend. Luckily, Insights will tell you how many new users are seeing posts because of the hashtags you use. Play around with relevant hashtags and see how it impacts post viewership. A good hashtag, when used well, can make your post engagement skyrocket.
